Dinosaurs: An Adventist View

DinosaursWebCov.jpg  Dinosaur!  The name evokes wonder and amazement.  It also raises interesting questions:  When did the dinosaurs live?  Where did they come from?  Why did they become extinct?  Science has answers to these questions, but science is guided by a godless philosophy.  What should Seventh-day Adventist Christians, guided by Scripture and the prophetic writings of Ellen G. White, think about the dinosaurs?  In his book, Dinosaurs: An Adventist View, David Read eloquently addresses these questions, and much more . . .

Among the topics discussed:

  •  How did geologists come to believe that the earth is billions of years old?
  • Is radiometric dating reliable?
  • Is long-ages geology compatible with Bible history?
  • Can Christianity and Darwinism be reconciled?
  • What did Ellen White say about Darwinism and long-ages geology?
  • Was the Genesis Flood universal, local, or mythical?
  • Is there a historical record of the Flood?
  • Can the Genesis Food explain the Ice Age better than naturalistic science?
  • Did dinosaurs evolve from other reptiles?
  • What is the mechanism of evolution?
  • Does the fossil record support Darwinism?
  • What are dinosaurs?
  • Did birds evolve from dinosaurs?
  • How does the Biblical view of ancient man differ from the Darwinian view?
  • How advanced were the ancients?
  • Ellen White’s “amalgamation” statements – could she have been referring to the dinosaurs?
  • Were the dinosaurs destroyed by a killer asteroid?
  • Did Noah’s ark carry dinosaurs, or were they destroyed in the Flood?
  • Where are the giant human remains spoken of by Ellen White?

Dinosaurs:  An Adventist View

Lawyers have long played a significant role in the conflict over origins.  I think I understand why this is so.  For lawyers, everything hangs in the argument, and when a lawyer sees an argument, he analyzes it for logical flaws, as wells as hidden premises and assumptions that may be wrong, or at least arguable.

When I heard that another lawyer was writing a book about dinosaurs, I was at first skeptical.  What can a lawyer know about dinosaurs in particular, and science in general that would qualify him to write such a book?  I soon found out the answer.  He knows a great deal.  David Read has qualified himself for this daunting task by digging deeply into the fundamentals of not only science as a discipline, and dinosaurs in particular, but he also displays extensive knowledge of geology and paleontology.  He has assembled the issues in a logical and insightful manner.  He presents his subjects with the skill of a good prosecuting attorney.  There is no possibility of a hung jury in this case.  I recommend his book as an excellent and timely source of information, not only for the facts concerning the controversy on origins, but as a good introduction to the dinosaurs as well.

It is my strong conviction that this book should be made available to Seventh-day Adventists and the public.  It is well-written, interesting and there is ample evidence of research and a scholarly approach.  It contains evidence of sound reasoning and is both faith and confidence building in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.

--  Neal C. Wilson, Retired President, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists

David Read offers some fresh insights on the topic of dinosaurs.  His work will assist Creationists in interpreting their position with some new ideas.  I anticipate that this work will be of great help to Christian teachers in their effort to explain to young minds the work of God in creation and the direction the science of evolution is attempting to take science education.  The book is a must for any Christian science teacher.  It is excellent material for preparing young minds to deal with questions of where these creatures came from and why they no longer exist.

In this crucial, end-time of world history, it is imperative that we acknowledge God as Creator.  This book will affirm and equip pastors and laypersons with a better understanding of both biblical and scientific evidence to proclaim creationism, the First Angel’s message of Revelation 14, with greater power.
